Imagine the image and sound of Bi Ngo and Aimee Leong, separate from the rest of the group, sitting in our makeshift “trolley” discussing the strictness of older Vietnamese generations. Bi was talking about her grandmother, quoting her with Aimee listening intently. Bi was speaking only in Vietnamese. A great little moment of exchange.
Later, Bi, Aimee and I were talking about the last paragraph of the monologue, and about the character’s split between loving George and loyalty to family. I was saying to Bi, something about how this girl really wishes she didn’t have to disobey her parents to see George, how family must mean so much, how her parents are very traditional and family is like a tight enclave, even somewhat separate from the rest of the world. Aimee just looked at us wide-eyed and said with wonder “You got all of that from my play?”
