Young Playwrights has been nominated for the Ted and Stevie Wolf Award for New Approaches to Collaboration! This year, Young Playwrights collaborated with the Mural Arts Program during our February Professional Productions of Nia Davis' Poetic Life and Marquis Herring's The Choices We Make. These productions featured not only the great works of these two Young Playwrights, but murals that served as part of the scenic design.
Philadelphia Young Playwrights has been recognized as a Champion in Action by Citizens Bank. This unique program rewards nonprofit organizations that work hard to champion change in our communities.
Our organization will receive financial support from the Citizens Bank Foundation, media coverage from NBC 10, and volunteer support from Citizens Bank, Greater Philadelphia Cares, NBC 10, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Daily News, and Philly.com, and public relations support.

"For those who think that our city's future is bleak, they need only take a look at what's happening in our schools. A good thing is happening every day in our schools, and Philadelphia Young Playwrights is what is making it happen."
- Mayor Michael A. Nutter, at Philadelphia Young Playwrights' Write On! Celebration, June 4, 2008.
We recently featured the visions and messages of student playwrights Nia Davis and Marquis Herring, both first-place winners of Young Playwrights' annual Playwriting Festival. With their plays, Poetic Life and The Choices We Make, both writers bravely fictionalized personal experience, crafting plays showing us young people grappling with violence and, ultimately, making choices to overcome it.

The 2008 Professional Productions cast on stage!
Nearly 1,000 students over 5 performances experienced the work presented at the brand-new Suzanne Roberts Theatre on the Avenue of the Arts. The performances included post-show interactive discussions with the playwrights and cast. We also provided an opportunity for students and audience members to write messages to Mayor Nutter with suggestions for anti-violence initiatives in school and home communities.
